University Health Network’s West Park Healthcare Centre Achieves LEED Silver Certification
EllisDon is proud to announce University Health Network’s West Park Healthcare Centre in Toronto has reached a significant sustainability milestone, earning LEED Silver certification for its newly redeveloped hospital facility.
This project involved the construction of a state-of-the-art hospital and the demolition of outdated structures, creating a modernized environment dedicated to providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services. With a specialized focus on rehabilitative and complex continuing care, the new facility is designed to serve patients for decades to come.
Key highlights of the project’s sustainable design include:
- Locally sourced materials: Over 25% of construction materials were locally sourced, exceeding LEED requirements and supporting regional economies.
- Commitment to healthier indoor air quality: Low-and non-emitting products were selected to contribute to a healthier indoor environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
- Focus on low-VOC materials: All materials were chosen with low VOC emissions to prioritize occupant health and comfort.
- Comprehensive energy efficiency plan, which includes solar shading, high-efficiency appliances, and occupancy sensors.
- Water conservation measures, top-tier ventilation systems that provide 100% fresh air
- Green roofs covering over 50% of available roof space help reduce urban heat island effects and minimize water usage
Once completed, this project will be a testament to our Cradle-to-Grave approach as there were multiple teams involved from start to finish – and beyond. Well done to our teams: Sustainable Building Solutions, Design Build Team, Capital, Facilities Services, and Energy & Digital Services. The redevelopment of West Park Healthcare Centre reflects EllisDon’s dedication to sustainable building practices and its commitment to enhancing patient care through innovative, responsible design and construction.
