Ibrahim’s Journey: The Next Generation of Skilled Trades with the STEP To Construction Program

"I got to hear about the trades first from my dad, because he's a labourer. He told me it'sa nice way to make money, so I was interested from the get-go," said Ibrahim Bah, a 17-year-old student currently working at the EllisDon University of Toronto Scarborough site.

For Ibrahim, this early exposure to the trades sparked a growing interest, and his experience in the STEP To Construction Program only deepened his appreciation for the industry. Throughout his placement, Ibrahim has interacted with various skilled trades professionals, all of whom created a welcoming environment for him.

It’s this supportive atmosphere that stood out most to Ibrahim. From improving his time management skills to learning alongside seasoned professionals, he feels at ease in the workplace. "It's like being at school," Ibrahim notes, emphasizing the relaxed yet educational dynamic on-site.

The STEP To Construction Program has given Ibrahim hands-on experience and the opportunity to understand the importance of building strong relationships in the trades. "If you have good relationships, they just make everything easier. No one’s going to stress you or make things too hard for you. They help you out," Ibrahim reflects.

Programs like STEP To Construction are shaping the future of skilled trades by providing young people with real-world experiences and mentorship needed to thrive in the industry.

EllisDon is proud to support students like Ibrahim as they explore their passion and prepare for their future in construction.
