Housing Solutions for Veterans
As we approach Remembrance Day, a time of reflection and respect for those who have served our country, we at EllisDon are reminded there are between 3,000 and 5,000 homeless veterans across Canada. Today, we want to highlight a partner helping homeless veterans build a better future.
Veterans’ House Canada is a registered charity providing much needed permanent, affordable, and supportive housing—a long-term solution to the pressing issue of veteran homelessness. By shifting focus from temporary shelters and transitional housing, Veterans’ House provides a veterans-only setting fostering a sense of community, rehabilitation and mutual support among peers.
Since opening its doors in Ottawa February 2021, Veterans’ House: the Andy Carswell Building has housed over 65 veterans.
Michael Laurignano, Senior Director, Client Solutions at EllisDon Community Builders said “Veterans’ House Canada is doing tremendous work to support veterans across Canada. The Andy Carswell building in Ottawa is inspirational. It provides amenities and services tailored to veterans and we are excited to be a part of developing a similar facility for veterans in Edmonton.”
This initiative isn't just about a roof over heads; it's about creating a space where dignity and camaraderie flourish. The development in Edmonton is set to break ground in January 2025. It includes 40 bachelor units and is designed with veterans' needs in mind: a social and fitness room, a library, and a park area with a BBQ for communal events. Additionally, there is a designated area for service dogs, acknowledging the role they play in many veterans' lives.
“Transitioning back to civilian life can be especially difficult and there is a growing need for more permanent, affordable and service-inclusive communities across Canada. Currently, we’re exploring critical cities including Toronto, Halifax, and Victoria for future projects,” says John Atoyebi, Marketing and Communications Manager at Veterans’ House Canada.
On Remembrance Day, as we honour the sacrifices of our veterans, let us also commit to supporting them beyond our moments of silence.
