Building a Sustainable Future: Mass Timber at Cowichan District Hospital

We're excited to share the latest update from the Cowichan District Hospital Replacement Project in North Cowichan, BC, where we've made significant strides in sustainable construction by installing mass timber elements. This innovative approach adds architectural beauty and exemplifies our commitment to eco-friendly building practices.

Key mass timber components, including glue-laminated columns and beams, cross laminated timber roof panels, and nail laminated timber roof panels, arrived on-site in early September. The community hall of the hospital is now showcasing the first set of these impressive structures.

Our dedicated team, in collaboration with Kinsol, managed the intricate installation process. Despite the challenges of working with prefabricated elements requiring precise tolerances, our team ensured seamless coordination among trades and specification adherence, protecting the integrity and aesthetics of the timber during construction.

We also provided client education on natural wood characteristics like checking and implementing a Water Mitigation Plan to preserve the timber's quality. This foresight will help minimize future maintenance and ensured that the wood's moisture content remained within ideal limits.

Kudos to the EllisDon Cowichan District Hospital Replacement Project team for their outstanding work in orchestrating the mass timber installation. Their collaboration, precision, and hard work have been key to the seamless and timely integration of these defining architectural elements.

Stay tuned as we continue to bring the vision of the future Cowichan District Hospital to life.
