The Story

Under contract to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), EllisDon constructed the Union Station Subway Platform and Concourse Improvements project to improve TTC and GO Transit passenger traffic. The subway platform space doubled in size by constructing a new platform to separate the Yonge and University Lines’ pedestrian traffic. Additional concourse space will also be provided, as well as a pedestrian corridor for GO Transit riders to bypass TTC’s paid area. Scope of work includes new ventilation shafts with fire alarm and fire ventilation equipment and new electrical, mechanical and communication rooms. The structural features include cast-in-place concrete and complex temporary shoring systems and utility support works; the mechanical features include heat conservation piping, unit heaters, split systems and basic access control systems; the architectural features include ceramic tiles, terrazzo borders, glass balustrades and stainless steel.

EllisDon’s expertise, in-house resources and innovative approach based on teamwork have contributed to the positive progression of this project. As the General Contractor, EllisDon is responsible for the performance of construction work, which has included: estimating, budgeting, risk assessment and mitigation, schedule creating and monitoring, constructability and project sequencing reviews, site logistics plans, Building Information Modeling (BIM), engineering services, tendering and management of subcontracts, health and safety, environmental management, stakeholder coordination, and quality assurance and control.
